Damien Martinez Set for Showdown Against California: Miami Faces Tough Golden Bears Defense

Miami’s running back, Damien Martinez, is set to face the California Golden Bears for the third time in his college career this Saturday night in Berkeley, and the stakes are high. Martinez, who previously played against Cal during his time with Oregon State in 2022 and 2023, has had significant success against the Golden Bears, but this year presents a new challenge.

Martinez’s Past Success vs. California

In his first two matchups against Cal, Martinez racked up 194 rushing yards on 40 carries, adding a touchdown and two receptions for 22 yards. His performances were key to Oregon State’s victories over California in both seasons:

In 2022, Martinez had 23 carries for 105 yards and a reception for 6 yards, leading Oregon State to a 38-10 victory. The Beavers’ offense produced 362 total yards, while the defense held Cal to a mere 156 yards.

During the 2023 season, Martinez was again instrumental, rushing 17 times for 89 yards and scoring a touchdown, adding a 16-yard reception. Oregon State’s offense exploded for 499 yards, including 203 on the ground, in a 52-40 victory. D.J. Uiagalelei’s stellar performance with 275 passing yards and five TDs complemented Martinez’s ground game.

Facing a Stiffer Challenge in 2024

However, Martinez will be up against a much-improved California run defense this year. Cal finished 37th nationally in 2023, allowing 133.38 rushing yards per game, but they’ve tightened the screws even more in 2024. Currently ranked 29th nationally, the Golden Bears are giving up only 105.25 rushing yards per game and holding opponents to 3.21 yards per carry.

California’s defense has proven to be formidable this season. In three games against FBS opponents, they’ve allowed an average of just 112.67 rushing yards per game. No running back has broken 100 yards against them yet this season, with San Diego State’s Marquez Cooper coming closest with 87 yards on 22 carries. Florida State’s Lawrance Toafili also found some success, rushing for 80 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Martinez’s 2024 Season So Far

Martinez’s production has dipped this season compared to his previous two years, where he averaged 1,083.5 rushing yards. In 2024, he’s logged 54 carries for 250 yards and four touchdowns, along with six receptions for 79 yards. As Miami has shifted its focus to the passing game, Martinez has become more of a complementary player within the offense. But with a tough matchup against a top-30 defense in California, his role could prove pivotal on Saturday night.

Miami’s Offensive Challenge

Miami will have their hands full facing California’s stout defense, especially in a night game with the Golden Bears’ home crowd expected to be raucous. Cal’s defense ranks 23rd nationally, and this game marks the first of three upcoming contests for Miami against top-25 defenses. After California, Miami will face Louisville (17th nationally) and Duke (25th nationally), making this a critical stretch for their season.

Can Martinez Break Through?

Martinez’s past performances against California have been strong, but with the Golden Bears’ improved defense and a shift in Miami’s offensive strategy, it remains to be seen if he can replicate that success. Saturday’s game could be a defining moment for Martinez as Miami battles one of the toughest defenses they’ll face this season.
