Asteroid to make its first-ever close approach to Earth! NASA predicts

Asteroid 2023 RQ6 is a member of the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, which was so called in honor of the enormous Apollo asteroid from 1862 and was found in the 1930s by German astronomer Kerl Reinmuth. They are space rocks that are traversing Earth with semi-major axes larger than Earth’s.

According to NASA, an asteroid will pass Earth on Friday, September 22, at a very close range. Asteroid 2023 RQ6 will make its closest approach to Earth ever on Friday, according to information provided by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

The asteroid will pass within 6.4 million kilometers of Earth thanks to its orbit. Although this distance might appear to be far, in astronomical terms it is close. Its estimated speed, according to NASA, is 33,912 kilometers per hour.

Despite coming close, NASA has not designated the asteroid 2023 RQ6 as a potentially hazardous object because it will not strike Earth’s surface. The asteroid is roughly 75 feet in diameter. Therefore, it is not a potentially hazardous object because it is not a sizeable object. In terms of size, it is comparable to an airplane.

With the use of cutting-edge ground- and space-based telescopes, the majority of asteroids found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter may be viewed. NASA researchers have, however, just discovered three mysterious asteroids that were hiding from the Sun’s brightness.

One of these asteroids is a sizable object that may be dangerous to Earth, according to the most recent NASA discovery. These asteroids were discovered and observed by a team using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) placed on the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope in Chile. Astronomers must contend with the Sun’s glazing when trying to find celestial objects in the area surrounding it.

Along with asteroid 2023 RQ6, asteroid 2023 SJ also approached Earth at its closest on September 21. It ranges in breadth from 52 feet to 118 feet.

A near-Earth asteroid named Bennu may travel into the planet’s orbit and collide with it by September 2182, according to a recent assessment by the OSIRIS-REx research team. The 1999 discovery of Bennu has been followed by NASA for 25 years. Every six years, Bennu travels close to Earth. In 1999, 2005, and 2011, it had three close encounters with Earth.
