NASA Updates Astronauts Sunita Williams & Butch Wilmore’s Return Date from ISS

by Tarang Kashyap

NASA has revised its schedule for the return of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS), setting March 19, 2025, as their new departure date. This adjustment moves their return forward by nearly two weeks from the previously planned early April timeline, according to reports.

Why Was Their Return Delayed?

The change in schedule is linked to SpaceX’s Crew-10 mission, which faced delays due to a technical issue with the new Dragon capsule. Originally set for launch in February, Crew-10’s mission was pushed to March 2025, which in turn postponed the return of Crew-9, the vehicle set to bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth.

NASA follows a structured transition protocol, ensuring that Crew-9 remains at the ISS until Crew-10 arrives for a seamless handover. This ensures operational continuity and safety aboard the space station.

NASA’s Updated Plans for Crew-10 and Crew-9

To speed up Crew-10’s launch, NASA has opted to switch to a different Dragon capsule, aiming to clear the way for a revised March liftoff. This move will allow Crew-9, along with Williams and Wilmore, to return home sooner than expected.

However, the astronauts’ journey has already faced multiple setbacks due to technical concerns with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Williams and Wilmore originally launched aboard Starliner on June 5, 2024, for its first crewed test flight. But propulsion system issues and helium leaks led to repeated delays in their return mission.

Are the Astronauts Stranded in Space?

In a recent statement, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Williams and Wilmore were “stranded” aboard the ISS, urging Elon Musk’s SpaceX to assist in their return. However, NASA officials dismissed these concerns, confirming that the astronauts are safe and on schedule for their return in March 2025.

Final Thoughts

With NASA accelerating its plans, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are expected to return safely aboard Crew-9’s capsule by mid-March. As space missions continue to evolve, delays and adjustments are common in ensuring astronaut safety and mission success. Stay tuned for more updates on their return journey!
